Border dancing Across Time Special Issue

EXÓTICA

ENDANGERED HUMAN MOVEMENTS ARTISTIC RESEARCH PUBLICATIONS

In early 20th-century Europe, the artists La Sarabia (1878–1988), Nyota Inyoka (1896–1971), François “Féral” Benga (1906–1957) and Leila Bederkhan (1903–1986) performed dances in Europe with great success . However, they were not featured in Western dance history and their work was forgotten, disappearing from the collective memory. The publication Exótica complements the performance EXOTICA – On the Brown History of European Dance, which centres on these artists, featuring essays, articles, interviews and conversations relevant to the artistic research. The publication wishes to complement the official History of European dance and performance, tracing back the heritage of racialised and or migrant artists performing on European theatre stages. The artists featured and the reflections of the performers of the piece, alive and working in Europe today build a reflection on the legacy of what was called the Exotic Cycle of European Dance, a vague and little historicised category deeply embedded in racism and colonialism. Contributors: André Bared Kabangu Bakambay, Fernanda Ermelindo Rodrigues, iSaAc Andrés Espinoza Hidrobo, Christina Gillinger Correa-Vivar, Nicole Haitzinger, Michel Jimenez, River Lin, Ángela Muñoz Martinez, Venuri Perera, Amanda Piña, Maria Pinto d’Aguiar, Federico Protto, Katia Schneller y Rolando Vázquez Melken.
