Salar is the Spanish word for a salt flat. The salars of the Atacama Desert were shaped over millions of years by tectonic activity, ancient lakes, and the movement of water through the landscape.

The performance engages with the salt flats of the Atacama Desert, where lithium is extracted to fuel the European transition toward renewable energies.

Examining lithium extraction through ecological, spiritual and colonial entanglements, drawing inspiration from quantum physics and micro biology, S A L A R explores alternative ways of perceiving relationships between bodies, technologies, and ecosystems.

Following the migratory routes of flamingos and butterflies, the performers carry messages from the salt flats and its inhabitants towards distant geographies.

Through the alchemical properties of salt and lithium and the atmospheric qualities of Andean wind instruments, S A L A R unfolds as a contemporary–ancestral mythology, a ritual of resonance, a possibility for Andean futurism.

 

The research includes a field trip to the Atacama Desert and to several Salt flats in the area; interviews with local community members, activists, scientists, and First Nations representatives; as well as an investigation into the role of salt in ancient European alchemy and Andean First Nations ontologies.

The resulting works—across performance, sound art, and sculpture—address the growing sacrifice zones and the ongoing struggles faced by communities living within extractivist industries today, proposing a polychrony of voices situated in different times, ancestral and future, contemporary and mythical.

The project seeks to offer new embodied perspectives on the climate and energy transition and the continued extraction and depletion of the systems of Earth through what the West has defined as “natural resources.”

Salar es la palabra en español para referirse a una planicie salina. Los salares del desierto de Atacama fueron formados y transformados a lo largo de millones de años por la actividad tectónica, antiguos lagos y el movimiento del agua a través del paisaje.

La performance se aproxima a los salares del desierto de Atacama, donde se extrae litio para impulsar la transición europea hacia las energías renovables.

A partir de las interrelaciones ecológicas, espirituales y coloniales que atraviesan la extracción de litio, e inspirándose en la física cuántica y la microbiología, S A L A R explora otras formas de percibir las relaciones entre cuerpos, tecnologías y ecosistemas.

Siguiendo las rutas migratorias de flamencos y mariposas, lxs performers llevan mensajes desde los salares y sus habitantes hacia geografías distantes.

A través de las propiedades alquímicas de la sal y el litio, y de las cualidades atmosféricas de los instrumentos de viento andinos, S A L A R se despliega como una mitología contemporáneo-ancestral, un ritual de resonancia, una posibilidad de futurismo andino.

La investigación incluye un viaje de campo al desierto de Atacama y a varios salares de la región; entrevistas con integrantes de comunidades locales, activistas, científicxs y representantes de pueblos originarios; así como una investigación sobre el papel de la sal en la alquimia europea antigua y en las ontologías de los pueblos originarios andinos.

Las obras resultantes —que abarcan la performance, el arte sonoro y la escultura— abordan las crecientes zonas de sacrificio y las luchas que continúan enfrentando las comunidades que viven en territorios atravesados por industrias extractivas, proponiendo una policronía de voces situadas en distintos tiempos: ancestrales y futuros, contemporáneos y míticos.

El proyecto busca ofrecer nuevas perspectivas encarnadas sobre la transición climática y energética, así como sobre la continua extracción y agotamiento de los sistemas de la Tierra a través de aquello que Occidente ha definido como «recursos naturales».
