S A L A R * is an artistic research and performance work that delves into the Salt Flats of the Atacama Desert, where lithium is extracted to power the European “green transition” from a carbon-based energy matrix to the so-called renewables.
Through the alchemical properties of salt and lithium and the atmospheric, biological, and multinatural dimensions of desert watershed ecologies, SALAR develops a future-ancestral mythology rooted in dreams, Andean Futurism and speculation.
The Work examines lithium extraction through ecological, cosmic, technological and colonial entanglements.
Drawing inspiration from microbiology and quantum physics understandings of matter and energy, the work explores alternative ways of perceiving the current historical moment through the relationships between bodies, minerals, technologies and ecosystems.
The research includes a field trip to the Atacama Desert and to several Salt flats in the area; interviews with local community members, activists, scientists, and First Nations representatives; as well as an investigation into the role of salt in ancient European alchemy and Andean First Nations ontologies.
The resulting works—across performance, sound art, and sculpture—address the growing sacrifice zones and the ongoing struggles faced by communities living within extractivist industries today, proposing a polychrony of voices situated in different times, ancestral and future, contemporary and mythical.
The project seeks to offer new embodied perspectives on the climate and energy transition and the continued extraction and depletion of the systems of Earth through what the West has defined as “natural resources.”
• Salar is the spanish name given to the salt flat ecosystem, the Salar de Atacama was formed through tectonic activity and the evaporation of an ancient lake millions of years ago. The region’s dry climate caused minerals, especially salt, to accumulate over time, creating the vast salt flats seen today.

S A L A R es un proyecto de investigación artística y performance que se adentra en los salares del desierto de Atacama, donde se extrae litio para impulsar la llamada “transición verde” europea, que busca pasar de una matriz energética basada en el carbono a las denominadas energías renovables.
A través de las propiedades alquímicas de la sal y el litio, así como de las dimensiones atmosféricas, biológicas y multinaturales de las ecologías de las cuencas hidrográficas del desierto, SALAR desarrolla una mitología futuro-ancestral arraigada en los sueños, el Futurismo Andino y la especulación.
La obra examina la extracción de litio a través de sus entramados ecológicos, cósmicos, tecnológicos y coloniales.
Inspirándose en las concepciones de la materia y la energía provenientes de la microbiología y la física cuántica, la obra explora formas alternativas de percibir el momento histórico actual a través de las relaciones entre cuerpos, minerales, tecnologías y ecosistemas.
La investigación incluye un viaje de campo al desierto de Atacama y a varios salares de la región; entrevistas con miembros de comunidades locales, activistas, científicos y representantes de pueblos originarios; así como una investigación sobre el papel de la sal en la alquimia europea antigua y en las ontologías de los pueblos originarios andinos.
Las obras resultantes —que abarcan performance, arte sonoro y escultura— abordan las crecientes zonas de sacrificio y las luchas que enfrentan actualmente las comunidades que viven dentro de territorios afectados por industrias extractivas. El proyecto propone una policronía de voces situadas en diferentes tiempos: ancestrales y futuros, contemporáneos y míticos.
El proyecto busca ofrecer nuevas perspectivas encarnadas sobre la transición climática y energética, así como sobre la continua extracción y agotamiento de los sistemas de la Tierra a través de aquello que Occidente ha definido como “recursos naturales”.
• Salar es el nombre en español que recibe el ecosistema de las salinas o salares. El Salar de Atacama se formó mediante la actividad tectónica y la evaporación de un antiguo lago hace millones de años. El clima extremadamente seco de la región provocó que minerales, especialmente sales, se acumularan con el tiempo, dando lugar a las extensas planicies salinas que vemos hoy.
